Robynne K Chutkan, MD, FASGE

Assistant Professor of Medicine, Author & Expert on Gastrointestinal Diseases

Dr. Chutkan received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1987 and her medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1991. She did her internship and residency in internal medicine at Columbia and also served as Chief Resident. After completing her fellowship in Gastroenterology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York in 1997, she joined the faculty in the Gastroenterology division at Georgetown Hospital in Washington DC.

In 2004 Dr. Chutkan founded the Digestive Center for Women (DCW), an integrative practice that includes nutritional consultation, stress reducing techniques such as massage therapy, biofeedback and counseling, and exercise physiology. The philosophy behind DCW is Dr. Chutkan’s fervent belief that diagnosis and treatment are best delivered in an integrative setting, where attention to diet, proper nutrition and lifestyle choices are taken into consideration, along with the specific gastrointestinal disease process. In addition to digestive disorders in women, her clinical areas of interest include inflammatory bowel diseases, video capsule endoscopy, diet, and nutrition and weight loss. Washingtonian magazine has consistently named her one of the top doctors in her field and she was also selected by the magazine as one of the 25 most beautiful Washingtonians.

Board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, Dr Chutkan serves on numerous committees and boards. She chaired the Training Committee for the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) from 2003 to 2006 and currently sits on the ASGE Governing Board. She is also on the Women’s Committees of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology. She has served as Vice-President for Education for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) Medical Advisory Committee and is actively involved in patient and physician education.

Dr. Chutkan has authored dozens of journal articles and book chapters. She has been a featured lecturer throughout the United States and internationally, including Chile, Uruguay, Croatia, Spain, Italy, and the Caribbean. She has also served as a medical consultant for National Geographic, Discovery Health, and various pharmaceutical companies, including Proctor and Gamble, Given Imaging, NPS Pharmaceuticals, Centocor and Abbott.

Dr. Chutkan was the host and moderator for the NIH sponsored series “Clinical Roundtable; the Bench to Bedside Series” which covered a wide range of medical topics. This continuing medical education series was broadcast to academic medical centers throughout the country. Dr. Chutkan has also made appearances on Discovery Health Channel as a host of newsbreaks and the popular Body Challenge Updates. She has been a frequent guest on CBS the Early Show and on local news programs speaking on gastrointestinal diseases, nutrition, and weight loss and food safety. She recently hosted an environmental series for schools on green energy. She has also served as the medical expert for several articles on GI diseases in women for Health and Women’s Health magazines and was recently featured in the Washington Times in an article on how physicians take care of themselves.

On a personal note, she is married and the proud mother of daughter, Sydney. She is fluent in Spanish and French and is an avid snowboarder, marathon runner and Vinyasa yoga practitioner. She is dedicated to helping her patients live not just longer, but better.
