Black History Month is here GO VISITS: Three national parks in Washington, DC

“Get to know African American history within easy access”

JNA is continuing its Black History Month, GO VISITS, recommending this week that you visit or take time this week to plan a visit. As part of our observance of Black History Month 2023, check out this video which sheds light on the three national parks in Washington, DC, that celebrate the contributions of three of the most influential Americans of all time – Frederick Douglass, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Dr. Carter G. Woodson – and the preservation projects that are currently underway will reopen in late Spring 2023, so their homes can be enjoyed for this and future generations.

According to the Home’s website, Douglass was a leading voice in the abolitionist movement. “Any time is great to learn about his incredible life, home, and vision.” One JNA member who has visited reminds us of the sweeping view of Washington D.C. from the grounds of his home, and how surprising that the incredible vistas accessible from Southeast DC are rarely talked about.

Here is a famous Frederick Douglass quote that is appropriate for the times we are living in:

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
