The Center for Africana Studies and the Department of History at Johns Hopkins University are hosting a one-day symposium celebrating the scholarship, legacy, and impact of Franklin Knight, Senior Ford Fellow, and the Emeritus Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Professor of History. This hybrid event will take place on Thursday, April 14, 2022, from 9:30 am-6:00 pm ET, and Professor Knight will participate in the festivities. This celebration will coincide with the launch of the “Franklin Knight Distinguished Lecture in Black Studies,” which Africana will hold annually in the Spring. The inaugural lecture will be delivered by Herman L. Bennett, Professor of History at CUNY, Graduate Center. In naming the lecture after Franklin Knight, the organizers aim to acknowledge his personal experience as the first Black faculty to earn tenure at Hopkins. This also recognizes Professor Knight’s role in developing the Center for Africana Studies, as well as the fields of Caribbean, African diasporic, and Atlantic histories, both at Hopkins and more broadly.
